Matches between pugilists were settled in front of a roaring crowd in the dirt fields behind five & dimes and John L. Sullivan was often the one causing the roar. He took on several fights through dares and wagers to get to his champ status and has remained a boxing legend. Sullivan had a record of 35 wins, 1 loss and 2 draws, with 30 wins by knockout.
