Pismo beach is home of over 1,500 acres of sand dunes and 5 1/2 miles of beach open for vehicle use. Seeking a new adventure, a few I&R team members gathered to head up North and shred the dunes on rental ATV's for the day. Unfortunately, we left the sunshine back home in Ventura, but it was a nice to be riding through the marine layer over the sand, into a mysterious horizon. We stayed in a tight pack most of the time to avoid getting split up or lost, and it made for better formation in our matching team jerseys. Cierra, Queen of the Dunes, showed us how it was done by racing in the bowls and climbing hills. Four wheels in the sand is such a blast. The sand is such a soft impact that you can whip around and counter steer the whole way, and if you high side (like some of us did ) you have a soft landing. The dunes were pretty empty, almost as if we had the place to ourselves. It's easy to get lost in the hills having fun on four wheels, but we had to head back to avoid a search party seeking out their rentals. We took the beach back and covered the quads and ourselves in salt water and mud, making it back just in time for the next fun seekers. Before heading home, we fueled our stomaches with cheeseburgers, and ice cream to top it all off. A perfect day trip for anyone looking to get out there and have some fun in the sand.
